ATEX certified:

Potentially explosive areas are classified in different zones (ATEX) according to the frequency and duration of the presence of hazardous explosive atmospheres. The definition of the zones in the European Union is standardised in Directive 1999/92/EC. A distinction is made between hazardous explosive areas due to gases and vapours (Zone 0, Zone 1 and Zone 2) or due to dusts (Zone 20, Zone 21 and Zone 22).

Here is an overview of hazardous explosive areas:

Gases / vapours (hazardous explosive areas due to gases):

Zone 0: An area in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of combustible gas, vapour or mist is present continuously or for long periods or frequently.

Zone 1: An area in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of combustible gas, vapour or mist is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally.

Zone 2: An area in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of combustible gas, vapour or mist is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if it does occur, will persist for a short period only.

Dusts (areas with combustible dust):

Zone 20: An area in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is present continuously or for long periods or frequently.

Zone 21: An area in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally.

Zone 22: An area in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if it does occur, will persist for a short period only.

The ATEX Directive regulates explosion protection. It is divided into the ATEX Product Directive 2016/34/EU (relevant for manufacturers and their products) and the ATEX Workplace Directive 1992/92/EG (relevant for product owners). The Product Directive protects people from explosion hazards. It defines the basic safety requirements for bringing products into circulation which are used in areas with explosive atmospheres.
