Excavation site in Gordion – restoring historical walls

Project description

Case Study 32

INITIAL SITUATION: Historical walls are being restored and rebuilt at an excavation site in Gordion (Turkey, near Ankara). It’s about fitting heavy and historically valuable stones precisely into walls. Targeted placement of heavy loads is the issue. The gantry crane must be transported to and assembled in rough terrain, here it is positioned not only at one single level, yet it must also be positioned on different levels with variable heights.

SOLUTION: For this application a custom-made gantry crane with separable beams is used, which would otherwise be difficult to transport due to the total beam length of 8000 mm. The custom-made alu gantry crane can be assembled at a low level and then the desired working height is adjusted by using the hand winches. Here also the revolving belt is very useful with which the park brake trolley can be moved on the double belt. This not only makes the work much easier for the operator yet is also a significant factor for occupational safety.

RESULT: Despite its huge dimensions the SCHILLING Aluminium Gantry Crane can be easily moved from one place to another due to its lightweight aluminium construction and separable beam. It is designed as a “movable under load” version, which makes it much easier to place the stones precisely.
